DML Talent’s first best-selling author was chef Gary Rhodes. He wrote over 15 best-selling cookery books during his career, so we had to be creative in order to keep things fresh. Jamie Oliver is dyslexic, and we were able to support his efforts, and his fast-paced career led to a great array of bestselling books. With DML Talent’s reputation firmly attached to cookery books, we went on to place many first-time chef author books, but in order to diversify our expertise, we started growing a steady stream of successful lifestyle and wellbeing book deals as well.
Understanding the market is key to creating a book proposal that will stand out and feel unique to the publisher. We focus on new trends, speak to publishers every week and have a very high success rate for first time authors. We support our authors through the entire process, helping them to hone their idea and write a winning book proposal which we then circulate to carefully selected commissioning editors. It is our job to find the right publisher for our clients and this is a multi-faceted challenge. We then negotiate the best possible deal for our author, keep a sharp eye on the PR aspect, and help create a social media strategy to uplift reach and sales. It is a very hands-on approach!
After 30 years in the business and nearly 300 books placed so far, our contacts and relationships with the publishing houses are genuine, long standing and built on trust. We like to think that when DML submits a proposal to an editor, it goes to the top of their reading pile due to their trust in us and our ability to spot a great book idea.
